PC Hardware Upgrade — HDD to NVMe SSD Migration with OS Cloning
The Problem
My laptop struggled to run multiple applications at once — especially Adobe Creative Cloud programs alongside other software. Using Task Manager to diagnose the slowdown, I found the hard drive sitting at or near 100% utilization: the aging HDD was the bottleneck, not the CPU or RAM.
The Plan
Rather than a fresh Windows install, I chose to clone the existing OS and files to a new drive to preserve my full working environment — installed programs, settings, and licenses — with zero reconfiguration.
Hardware selected:
- Samsung 990 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe SSD (M.2 2280, PCIe Gen 4x4, up to 7,250 MB/s read speeds)
- Sabrent USB 3.2 Type-C tool-free M.2 NVMe enclosure — used to connect the new SSD externally during the cloning process
The Process
- Installed the 990 EVO Plus into the Sabrent enclosure and connected it to the laptop over USB 3.2.
- Used Samsung Magician's cloning tool to migrate the entire OS, applications, and data from the internal HDD to the SSD.
- After verifying the clone completed successfully, opened the laptop and physically swapped the drives, installing the SSD internally.
Verification
- Entered BIOS to confirm the system detected the new SSD and booted from it as the primary drive.
- Booted into Windows and confirmed all applications, files, and settings carried over intact.
- Checked drive health and firmware status in Samsung Magician.
Results
The bottleneck is gone. The laptop now runs multiple programs simultaneously — including Adobe applications — without slowdowns, and overall responsiveness (boot, app launches, file operations) improved dramatically. Task Manager no longer shows disk utilization maxing out under normal multitasking.
